One of the things that limits us the most from achieving greatness is the idea of who we think we are.
Oh, I’m not like those other girls. I can’t have popularity because I am not an extrovert. I can never spend money like that because I grew up poor.
We think we are solid and unchangeable. We are the way we are and some things are simply out of our reach because that’s not who we are.
I just can’t learn French because I’ve never done it before.
I can’t be bold and expressive because I’m shy and timid.
I can’t imagine myself having a lot of friends, because I’ve always only had a few.
I can’t spend all this money and beauty and clothes, because that’s what shallow girls do and I’m not one of them.
I can’t go on vacation for a month, because hard workers like me don’t do that.
If you’re thinking this way, you have a fixed mindset.
Imagine
Image how much bullshit all of us tell ourselves on a daily basis. Imagine how many dreams have been crushed by the curse of identity. I can’t do something because that’s not who I am yet.
Do you see how ridiculous that sounds?
How can you be something right now that you’re only just becoming?
Solution
The solution to this problem is mental agility and the ability to feel.
Your small self will feel strong resistance to you telling it things will be different from now on.
It will feel resistance to you letting it know, the old you is dead and the new you is rising from the ashes.
This kind of work is difficult to do alone.
You need someone who’s done 10x what you’re struggling with and can see past all your bullshit.
If you’re racking your brain on how to make 5k ask someone who’s made 5 million. Your problem will seem miniscule.
You need someone to hold space and show you what’s possible, so you can start believing it too.
Your biggest tool is your belief. Can you dare to believe?
Can you dare to believe?
Can you dare to believe things will be different?
Can you dare to believe things can work out?
Can you dare to believe people will love you and buy your work?
Can you dare to believe you will make 5k more than you made last month doing what you love?
Can you dare to believe this person actually wants you?
Can you dare to believe?
Growth mindset vs fixed mindset
The growth mindset vs fixed mindset is a concept developed by Stanford professor Carol Dweck that she discovered by observing children in the process of learning.
Some children didn’t want to perform challenging tasks because they were afraid of their identity shattering (being exposed as not being smart). Some children, on the other hand, craved challenges because they knew that’s how they grow.
The first group believed their character and skills are set in stone and unchangeable. You are either smart or you aren’t. You are good at sports or you aren’t.
The second group believed they can grow and develop their skills. One just has to try.
If you are willing to put it on the line, regardless of your embarrassment, you can have it all.
